In this category, I scout players all around the world, so you can improve your soccer training. These scouting reports describe the player and their strengths. Finally, learn how to improve your soccer training, and how to become a better soccer player. Read how various abilities differ by position and learn how you can level up your game by improving your skills. Know your strengths and adapt your style of play towards it. In this way, a positional role can be interpreted in various ways, but mostly dependent on the team strategy.

In the first episode of Players to Watch, we are scouting left wing back David Raum. David Raum is currently one of the best wing backs on this planet. The German international combines defensive dominance, attacking power, technical skills, physical robustness, and passion. David Raum is 26 years old and plays left wing back at RB Leipzig. He’s 5’11’’, plays his third year for the club from Saxony, and has a contract until June 2027. He is also member of the German Nationalmannschaft and played the Euro Championship 2024. Find out why David Raum is currently one of the best wing backs in the world.

Left back with attacking power

Undoubtedly, Raum’s special quality is his for a defender unmatched attacking power. With a top speed of 35.25km/h, he is one of the fastest Bundesliga players. In 10 Bundesliga appearances this season, Raum crossed 25 times out of open play and assisted 3 goals. In his club, only Lois Openda assisted more goals so far (5). Raum’s top speed shows that he loves to attack and cover long distances. A vertical style of play, like Leipzig, compliments his speed and stamina. Raum’s physical abilities are the foundation of his attacking play and make him a great choice for the lateral player in a 3-5-2 formation.

Bend it like Raum!

On average, Raum creates 2.3 chances per game. This is the 7th highest value in the Bundesliga. While his speed and stamina open promising positions, Raum’s technical abilities help creating danger. The wing back has a great first touch with his left foot, controlling the short and long balls in high speed. His dribbling is linear and powerful and aims to get rid of the opponent. David Raum is not the one player showing off with tekkers, however, due to his powerful runs he does not need it. Once he gets close to the box, he can finally do what he can do best – cross it! Precise, powerful crosses, first or second post, on Sesko’s head or Baumgartner’s right foot. Doesn’t matter! David Raum combines accuracy and strength in his crosses with his left foot. His short passing game is simple and on point. Overlap runs and one-twos with the players around him, bring Raum into the attacking third. There, he can swing it in from the outfield, or go down the line and cross it from there.

Tough bundesliga Left back

Raum shows his power also on defense. On average, he wins 6.7 tackles per game. In Leipzig’s own half, Raum stays put before he aggressively tackles the opponent, pressing him towards the sideline. Whereas, in high press situations, Raum is an aggressive element of Leipzig’s Gegenpressing. With three center backs, there is enough coverage making it less risky for Raum to press even in the opponent’s half. This way Raum wins possession in the attacking third almost once every other game. Despite all this power, this season Raum only received a single yellow card, so far. Raum is a self-confident and passionate player, motivates and pushes his teammates on and off the pitch. He can be a team’s emotional leader. With his power, energy, and positivity David can be an important pillar in any team.

Scouting and analyzing a player will help you to improve your soccer practice. Scouting left back David Raum will teach you that crossing the ball into the box is a key feature of any lateral player. You want to be able to accurately swing the ball, somewhere between the 5-yard-box and the PK mark, from down the line and the outfield. Practice both your legs to be unpredictable for your opponent. This way, you can also play on either the right or left side. This will make you more valuable for your team and increase your chances to make it in the starting line-up.

Another key ability for wingers is speed and stamina. You want to be able to sprint down the line, and you want to be able to do it in minute 89. Kids in Elementary and Middle School want to focus on speed and agility drills. Growing older, strength training and extensive speed drills can help build up repeated sprint ability.
