Team USA celebrates first World Cup 2026 victory. Mauricio Pochettino coaching US soccer players to win first world cup game in Southern California. Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun lead the USMNT to a comfortable 4-1 over Paraguay. Team USA started their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive performance at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles. The USMNT started in a dynamic 5-3-2 formation. The center back was formed by Chris Richards, who had the experienced Tim Ream and the talented Alex Freeman to his sides. Dest and Robinson as wingbacks gave the US width and depth in offense, and numbers in midfield. Their roles were crucial to the US success. Adams and McKennie tightend the space in front of the back three. While Tilman focused on the creative elements of the US game, Balogun was a physical anker very high up the field. And then, there was Christian Pulisic. His role was flexible between left wing, striker and a bit attacking mid.
USA shows how to play pressing high up the field
Defense wins championship, so they say. The USA wins the opening game by showing a mature performance last night, defending well in a tight block and aggressively high up the field. This was visible already at kick-off, when Team USA kicked the ball directly out of bounds, deep into Paraguay’s half, immediately causing a high-press situation. Paraguay’s build-up game was interrupted early on, when Tilman or the wingbacks would press high. Pressing your opponent aggressively up the field, requires three things: First, you got to have the stamina. The players must be physically able to run full speed the next 60seconds, chasing the ball, several times per game. Second, pressing is teamwork! Each player needs to run towards the ball, keeping the distances to your teammates short, thus narrowing the space for the opponent. If Adams and McKennie would not support the first pressing wave, Paraguay could easily play their way out from the press. And the most important part of playing high press is: faith. The pressing players must believe they can win the ball. Only then, they will be also mentally ready to press high up the field.
USA wins game by opening space and deep runs
Vertical runs causing trouble in Paraguay’s defense. Balogun mainly functions as an anker player, binding and stirring up the center-backs. Dest and Robinson playing high up the field, giving the US game width and depth. Their support, and Pulisic dropping wide, rips the Paraguay back four apart; the spaces between their defenders become wider. Vertical runs will exploit these gaps at each of the first three USA goals. The first goal was created by Pulisic dribbling through the gap. Pulisic narrowly controls the ball, his defenders not having a chance accessing the ball. With his quick ankle movements, Pulisic binds several defenders and creates open space elsewhere. The 2-0 was initiated by Pulisic going deep, exploiting the huge open space behind the defenders with his speed. Also, the third goal was created by a long through ball by Adams, chased by Balogun. Robinson, Dest, McKennie, and Adams all show runs deep, creating chances, causing trouble, and creating space.
coach Compliments players' strengths
A coach needs to find ways to compliment the players’ strengths. In youth development, soccer players must train all parts of soccer performance. The first thing kids need to develop is their skills set. Their skills are developed best in very young ages. If Pulisic would not have practiced his speed dribbling early on, it would be so much harder to learn at a later stage in his career. The first tactical aspects are also developed in early stages – how do you position yourself to the ball? Which foot do you use to kick the ball? Individual tactics will be built upon to create group tactics, such as playing one-twos or covering my teammate. Finally, high schoolers focus on learning and understanding various team tactics. A coach at the FIFA World Cup, like Pochettino must find the eleven players, best complimentary to each, put in a tactical concept complimenting the optimum of each player’s strengths.
